My Spouse has an outstanding student loan (about to go into default), can I still get a student loan?

I live in Michigan (I do not know if this can make a difference) and my husband told me that they may not give me a student loan because of his past student loan that has yet to be paid (and as I have previously stated, about to go into default.) Can this affect my student loan? And if it can, how can it affect me?
